Gifted and Talented
LAUSD's Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) program is designed to address the learning styles of students who have been identified as gifted and talented and provide them with an enriched education.
At Sixty-First Street Elementary School, students are screened for giftedness in each GATE category. Students are automatically identified in areas of High Achievement from their high SBAC scores in both the ELA and Mathematics, or their high scores from their second grade Otis-Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT).
In addition, classroom teachers and parents may refer students for consideration by the GATE Department, which may include testing with a psychologist, a portfolio assessment, or an audition.
Parents are also provided GATE Workshops to support their children before and after gifted identification. Mrs. Maldonado is the GATE coordinator for the 2023-24 school year.
